The U. S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to avoid taking the prescription drug Celebrex if they have a heart condition or if they have a history of it, according to an analysis of documents and information submitted to the FDA by GlaxoSmithKline. The FDA said that patients taking the drug have a five-fold increase risk of heart attack and stroke and a fivefold increase risk of death when compared with those taking a placebo.
Celebrex is not approved to treat any of the following conditions:
The FDA warned that patients taking Celebrex for heart conditions may experience an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, and a risk of death when compared with those taking a placebo. The FDA said that patients taking the drug may have a five-fold increase in the risk of heart attack and stroke and a five-fold increase risk of death.
The FDA said that patients taking the drug for a heart condition should not take Celebrex if they have a history of heart disease or if they have a history of heart failure. The drug’s FDA label states that Celebrex “has not been approved by the FDA to treat or prevent any of the following conditions.”
In March, the FDA said that Celebrex “has not been approved to treat or prevent any of the following conditions:”
It also warned that patients taking Celebrex for heart conditions should not take the drug if they have heart disease, diabetes or high blood sugar, the FDA said. The drug is approved to treat heart disease and stroke by the FDA’s Office of Drugs in the Public Interest.
GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) said in its statement that “Patients should avoid taking any medication that contains Celebrex and should never take any medication that contains aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, diclofenac or any other anti-inflammatory drug.” The company said that patients taking the drug may have a five-fold increase risk of heart attack and stroke. GSK also added that it was reviewing its data and safety data on Celebrex. GSK did not return a call for comment. The FDA has not received a response to GSK's statement regarding the risks to patients taking Celebrex. A statement from the FDA said that “The risk of serious cardiovascular events associated with Celebrex should be carefully considered in patients receiving Celebrex.” The FDA also said that “the FDA is evaluating the data and determining whether any additional information is needed to fully and effectively address this important safety issue.”
The FDA also warned that patients taking the drug may experience a five-fold increase in heart attack and stroke.
The FDA said that the risk of heart attack or stroke, including strokes, increases with the dose and duration of Celebrex. The FDA noted that the risk of heart attack or stroke in patients taking Celebrex appears to be dose-related. The drug also appears to increase the risk of serious cardiovascular events, such as heart attack and stroke, when taken with certain other medications that contain blood thinners or NSAIDs. “There is a risk of heart attack or stroke associated with Celebrex use, and patients should be aware that they may experience a cardiovascular event while taking the medication,” the FDA wrote in a statement. “Patients should discuss the risk of these events with their physician, and if they experience any of the symptoms, including chest pain or shortness of breath, consult with their physician.”

Celecoxib, commonly known by its trade nameCelebrex, is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) that works by inhibiting the activity of cyclooxygenase (COX). This action helps to relieve pain and reduce inflammation associated with conditions like arthritis, trauma, and osteoarthritis. Celecoxib is widely used for the treatment of various medical conditions, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and acute pain. Its safety and efficacy have made it a cornerstone in the treatment of conditions such as ulceration, bleeding, and perforation associated with gastrointestinal (GI) disorders.
The global Celecoxib market has been experiencing significant growth. As of 2023, the market size was valued at USD 9.2 billion and is expected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of X% from a value ofrolley in the early 1990's to mid-2010's. This growth is driven by increasing healthcare expenditures and the availability of effective treatments.
The market was valued as high in the northern and northwest regions of China, the north and east and central Asia, as well as theabaddu region in India. The Asia-Pacific region is another significant region for the Celecoxib market.
Several key drivers are evident from the increase in the Celecoxib market. The increased healthcare expenditures and the growing awareness of acute symptoms associated with GI disorders contribute to this demand.
Despite the growth, the Celecoxib market faces some restraints due to several key factors:
The Celecoxib segment is segmented into GI disorders, inflammation, pain, inflammation, peritonitis, and perforations. The specific segmentation results from the diverse uses of the drug, from treating GI disorders to preventing acute symptoms associated with acute symptoms and treating pain in acute conditions.
